Berlin: Be Bold

I never imagined that I would find myself in the vanguard of a revolution.

And yet, like it or not, that is where we are today.

The speed and disruptive impact of today's technological change on our lives, how we work and do business is without precedent. The World Economic Forum has called this fusion of digital, physical and biological the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Ensuring that its benefits reach businesses and people through the built environment is what the BCO is all about. But designing and delivering spaces that harness new opportunities to foster creativity, connection and human fulfilment is going to take revolutionary thinking on our part at the BCO.

Intelligent, talented people do not come from one section of society. There is no generic occupier: there can be no generic office space. We have to draw on a variety of backgrounds, education and experiences if we want to create places that embrace and engage difference in gender, age, and culture all to good effect. We should be building communities for occupiers.

That's why the theme of this year's BCO Conference is Diversity and Inclusion, a look at the workplace from multiple occupier perspectives.

So we have a big tent, and a festival of ideas! Hear what the world's leading neuroscientists, technologists, behaviourists and property pundits have to tell us. Listen to cutting edge, practical advice on what we, but especially the next generation of BCO members, need to get to grips with in order to make space for quality of life at work.

And where better to join them than Berlin, a city where the future has come early. There are astonishing buildings for us to tour and learn from here. It's a major tech startup, scaleup and cultural hub, with 40% of the population under 35.

Or, put another way, Berlin knows how to party, and as chair of this year's BCO Conference, if I can't dance, then I don't want to be part of the revolution.
